How Can Parents Help?
Parents, as a major part of your child’s team, there are several things to pay attention to.
STUDENT SUPPLIES
Everyday, at school, your child is required to have a three-ring notebook that you should inspect periodically. It should be kept in good, clean condition; it should contain subject dividers and have enough unused, white, lined paper to do upcoming assignments. Your child is also expected to have proper writing tools - a #2 pencil and/or writing pen. No marking pens or white out are allowed.
HOMEWORK
Every student should do homework and study for about one-and-a-half to two hours per weekday evening. It is a good idea to ask to see your student’s completed work and to check it for completeness and quality. Many times the homework is not a writing or reading assignment but is a study assignment. Words need to be studied for correct spelling, definitions need to be learned, concepts need to be reviewed and practiced, and some things need to be memorized. These are all as important as written assignments. Please go over these with your child, and quiz him or her on the material. On nights when there is little or no homework, leisure reading, review, and recopying their class notes should be encouraged. Some homework assignments can be checked on the Brookhurst website.
LONG TERM ASSIGNMENTS
For book reports, term papers, projects, and other learning activities that last for a week or more, discuss with your child how he or she plans to proceed. Help make a plan that spreads the work out over many days. Discourage waiting until the last minute.
YOUR HOME OFFICE
Research has shown that, for most students, studying in the same quiet place every night is preferable to studying in different places in the home. A well-lit desk in a bedroom or a kitchen table that is cleared of unnecessary items is an excellent place to study. A study hour or time segment that becomes an “office hour” is highly recommended. The student will complete homework every night at the same time and get into the habit of reviewing the course work.
PARENTING SESSIONS
Parenting Workshops are offered throughout the district. Please call Ms. Kim Bauerle at 999-2179 for more information.
DRESS CODE
Students are expected to make responsible choices in grooming and dress so that the educational process will not be disrupted. While on campus, or at any school-sponsored events, students and guests shall be dressed and groomed in a manner which reflects good taste and decency, and will not detract from or interfere with the educational environment, instructional program, general morale, or image of the school. All dress must be modest, neat, clean and consistent with legal provisions. Please support our uniform dress code policy.
